DIRECT PETROL INJECTION FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 has Lexus stoichiometric direct petrol injection system to optimise performance, increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

The direct injection system controls fuel injection timing and volume, air/fuel ratio and throttle valve position.

Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure, improving combustion efficiency and reducing pumping losses.

Direct injection enhances the intake air cooling effect in the cylinder, increasing charging efficiency and resistance to engine knock.

The ability to resist engine knock (detonation) allows for a high compression ratio, improving power and torque across the engine revolution range.

Direct petrol injection boosts power and torque, compared to a multi-port injection engine.

The direct injection-equipped Lexus engine has compact, high-pressure single-orifice slit-nozzle injectors to maximise fuel atomisation.

The injector atomises fuel into a fine mist and expands it to form a large, fan-shaped pattern in the combustion chamber.

This occurs as the downstroke of the piston draws in a large volume of air. The cooling effect of the fuel (taking advantage of the latent heat of vaporisation) increases the intake air volume and improves charging efficiency.

The lower temperature of the compressed charge allows the engine designers to employ a high compression ratio for increased power while reducing the chance of detonation.

Moreover, the intake air forms a vertical swirl current (tumble current) to promote improved fuel-air mixing, and, therefore, improve performance and reduce emissions.

The injector has a special coating on its nozzle to resist carbon deposits.

The area where the injector body meets the cylinder head has an insulator and the injector shaft has two Teflon seals. This helps resist cylinder pressure, improve sealing performance and reduce vibration.

The Lexus direct injection system utilises a high compression ratio of 12.0:1 in IS250 to boost performance.

At light engine loading, the stratified charge system creates an area of rich mixture near the spark plug, so it ignites easily.

The mixture becomes leaner in the combustion chamber extremities.

At high engine loading, the combustion mixture is more uniform.

Injection timing varies according to driving conditions, with the system programmed to inject at the optimal point in the intake stroke to achieve a homogenous air/fuel mixture.

However, the fuel is injected at the end of the compression stroke when the engine is cold. This raises engine temperature, accelerating engine and catalyst warm-up which improves exhaust purification.

Stratified charge combustion technology has existed within the Lexus domain for a decade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEXUS V6 HAS RAFT OF NEW TECHNOLOGY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250’s Quad Cam V6 engine combines the Lexus technologies of direct petrol injection and intelligent variable valve timing (VVT-i) for inlet and exhaust.

It also has roller rockers, high-tumble inlet ports, swirl-control valves in the inlet ports, an electronic Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) and a die-cast aluminium cylinder block.

Lexus designed the 60-degree V6 for a combination of high performance, fuel efficiency, package efficiency, reliability and serviceability, coupled with light weight, low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and low emissions.

The Lexus 4GR-FSE engine has an oversquare bore and stroke relationship of 83.0mm x 77.0mm for a swept capacity of 2500cc.

Compression ratio is 12.0:1 (the highest in the Lexus range) for increased power and economy across the engine revolution range.

The combination of direct petrol injection and dual VVT-i boosts performance and economy, while minimising emissions.

The 4GR-FSE engine has high-tumble inlet ports to increase turbulence in the combustion chamber, improving combustion.

Cut-outs in the wall of the intake port – opposite the valve guide – help promote a swirl pattern inside the cylinder.

The flow pattern is down the cylinder walls and up in the centre towards the centrally mounted spark plug.

The "slanted squish" combustion chamber shape is based on a narrow included valve angle.

Lexus engineers have adopted roller rockers (with maintenance-free valve clearance adjusters) to create the narrow included valve angle while providing sufficient spacing between the camshafts for the primary camshaft drive sprockets.

The compact combustion chamber shape offers a low surface-to-volume ratio, reducing cooling losses and increasing fuel efficiency.

The 4GR-FSE engine also has swirl control valves in the inlet ports to improve fuel atomisation at low engine speeds and low engine temperatures, improving fuel efficiency.

The swirl control valve – a butterfly valve in one of each pair of inlet ports – closes at low engine temperatures and low engine revolutions to increase turbulence in the cylinder.

The new Lexus V6 has electronic control for the ACIS – based on information on engine revolutions and throttle position.

ACIS varies the effective length of the inlet runners to make maximum use of the inlet pulsation effect for increased breathing efficiency.

It creates a long manifold effect to boost torque in the low to medium engine speed ranges and a short manifold effect to boost power at high rpm.

The stainless-steel exhaust manifold has a dual-pipe (air gap) structure and a built-in three-way catalyst to boost catalyst temperature and reduce HC emissions from cold start.

This design accelerates the warm-up of the catalyst immediately after start-up, which in turn reduces exhaust emissions.

Lexus has maximised reliability and serviceability by adopting cast hypereutectic aluminium alloy pistons, chain camshaft drive, maintenance-free valve clearance adjusters, a replaceable element oil filter, direct ignition, electronic engine control, an oil-level sensor and an air/fuel ratio sensor.

Hypereutectic aluminium alloy pistons allow for tighter skirt clearances than a forged piston to avoid cold-start piston slap.

In addition to strength, the hypereutectic piston improves resistance to scuffs and seizure, and generally runs cooler.

The 4GR-FSE’s weight-saving features include its thin-wall cast-aluminium inlet manifold, die-cast aluminium cylinder block and simplified cylinder head structure, with two-piece heads that divide at the cam journals.

The engine has a service weight of 180kg, compared to 213kg for the superseded IS300 engine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DUAL VVT-I ENGINE FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 has a dual variable valve timing engine, for improved performance and fuel efficiency, and lower emissions.

The Lexus dual VVT-i system provides optimum inlet and exhaust valve timing across the range of engine operating conditions.

The IS250 Quad Cam V6 engine offers the benefit of improved torque at low revolutions.

It also makes better use of the expansion ratio in the cylinder and better use of exhaust pulsation to improve engine breathing at high revolutions.

These goals are mutually exclusive in conventional engines.

The Lexus dual VVT-i system boosts torque from idle to 3000rpm engine speed range and in the high engine speed range.

The dual VVT-i system in the 2.5-litre 4GR-FSE engine can independently vary inlet timing over a range of 40 degrees (relative to crankshaft angle) and independently vary exhaust timing over a range of 35 degrees.

It optimises the valve overlap period according to engine and driving conditions, to make full use of exhaust pulsation and increase cylinder filling at high rpm.

The system can vary the range of valve overlap from minus three degrees (when the exhaust camshaft timing is fully advanced and the inlet camshaft timing is fully retarded) to plus 72 degrees.

The inlet camshafts have 244 degrees of duration and the exhaust camshafts have 240 degrees of duration.

Lexus’ dual VVT-i has four main operating scenarios:

Low engine temperature, engine start, idling or light load: inlet camshaft on full retard, exhaust camshaft on full advance. This eliminates valve overlap, thereby reducing volume of exhaust gas blowback into the cylinder and inlet ports – for stable combustion and improved fuel economy.

Medium load range:: inlet timing is advanced and exhaust timing is retarded, for increased overlap. This creates two parallel effects – increased internal exhaust gas recirculation rate to reduce oxides of nitrogen and re-burn hydrocarbon, and reduced pumping losses and hence improved fuel economy.

High-load range, low to medium engine speed:: inlet timing is advanced to close the intake valve earlier, thereby reducing the volume of intake air blowback into the inlet ports and improving volumetric efficiency.

High-load range, high engine speed:: inlet timing retarded, exhaust timing advanced. Retarding the inlet timing (according to the inertial force of the inlet air) improves volumetric efficiency and hence power.

The 4GR-FSE engine’s ECU controls camshaft advance and retard, via an oil control valve mounted on the cylinder head and vane-type actuators on the ends of the four camshafts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW SIX-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus’ new IS250 and IS250 Sports models have the choice of new close-ratio six-speed manual or six-speed sequential automatic transmissions.

IS200 was one of the first cars in its class at its Australian launch in 1999 with a six-speed transmission.

IS250’s new Lexus RA62 manual transmission combines compact construction and high-quality shift feel.

It has triple-cone synchromesh on first, second and third gears to improve shift quality and gearbox durability.

A remote-controlled shift mechanism reduces gear knob vibration.

The shift mechanism includes four shift forks and a sliding-shaft-type shift shaft.

The RA62 transmission uses an output reduction system in the gear train rather than an input shaft reduction system, to reduce transmission size, weight and shift effort.

Safety features include a clutch-start system (the engine will not start unless the clutch pedal is depressed) and a release collar on the shift lever to prevent accidental engagement of reverse gear.

The RA62 transmission has ratios of first, 3.791; second, 2.275; third, 1.524; fourth, 1.185; fifth, 1.000; sixth, 0.786 and reverse, 3.466.

It is matched to a 3.583:1 final drive ratio.

IS250 manual has 261 square centimetres of clutch facing area, for optimum reliability.

The clutch pedal has a turnover mechanism to reduce pedal effort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PADDLE SHIFT AUTO FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has the availability of a six-speed multi-mode intelligent automatic transmission with a sequential shift, using either an S-mode gate shift lever or paddles on the steering wheel.

The steering wheel has the up-shift metallic paddle on the right and the down-shift paddle on the left.

A gear position indicator has been included in IS250’s multi-information display.

The sequential automatic transmission is offered along with manual transmission alternative on IS250 and IS250 Sports, and is exclusive equipment on IS250 Sports Luxury.

The IS250 combination of dual VVT-i Quad Cam V6 engine, electronic throttle and six-speed automatic transmission is designed to optimise driveability, acceleration feel, shift quality and fuel economy.

IS250 has a close-ratio six-speed ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission), with triple planetary gears.

Superseded IS200 had a four-speed automatic transmission and superseded IS300 had a five-speed automatic transmission.

IS250 uses Lexus A960E transmission, with the following ratios: first, 3.538; second, 2.060; third, 1.404; fourth, 1.000; fifth, 0.713; sixth, 0.582 and reverse, 3.168.

It is matched to a 3.909:1 final drive ratio for the IS250.

Lexus engineers used triple planetary gears and state-of-the-art hydraulic technology to produce six-speed transmissions with similar weight and package efficiency to the superseded IS300 five-speed transmission.

Special attention was paid to the selection of friction materials and automatic transmission fluid to help ensure smooth torque converter lock-up.

Refining the transmission electronics and hydraulic servo units has ensured trademark Lexus quality shift feel.

Sequential shift, IS250’s multi-mode transmission, can be driven as an automatic or used to shift gears manually, using the S-Mode position on the shift gate or the shift paddles.

Moving the gearshift lever from D into S mode activates the sequential shift mode.

In the S position, moving the gearshift lever forward will up-shift the transmission, while moving the lever rearward will down-shift.

The transmission’s electronic control unit momentarily retards the ignition during manual down changes to ensure smooth shifting.

The gear position indicator in the combination meter automatically switches to the S position when the manual mode is selected to display the relevant gear.

Road condition support control and intelligent transmission software gives IS250 automatic smooth shifting performance in automatic mode – particularly, on winding or hilly roads.

The Lexus artificial intelligence (AI Shift) transmission algorithm is designed to manage the shift regime according to road conditions and driver behaviour.

It uses data on accelerator pedal angle and rate of change, throttle angle and engine speed.

The Lexus AI Shift can adjust the shift pattern to suit different drivers and provide engine braking for hill descents.

The system works in conjunction with IS250’s intelligent electronic throttle.

The salient characteristics of the AI Shift system are as follows:

· has advanced hydraulic control and electronic control transmission (ECT) technology to provide smooth shifting;

· manages the timing of torque reduction and speed control, through the manipulation of the clutch brake system, according to data on the operation of the accelerator pedal and throttle angle;

· has a "no up-shift" mode to hold the transmission in gear, rather than down-shifting briefly for improved driveability on hill ascents;

· has a “down-shift and hold” mode to provide improved driveability on hill descents.

CHASSIS DYNAMICS A HALLMARK OF IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The IS250 chassis sets new Lexus benchmarks for its balance of roadholding, steering, ride characteristics and low noise levels.

Lexus has completely redesigned IS250’s chassis package, with new front and rear suspension, electronic power steering, new steering componentry and new high-performance monotube dampers.

IS250’s suspension hardware is similar to GS300, with added refinements and a new purpose-designed calibration.

IS250 has shorter front suspension struts than the GS, which lower the bonnet line.

It adopts monotube dampers for increased performance and fine tuning at low damper velocities. This optimises body control, road tracking capability and ride comfort.

IS250 also has the Lexus first of a front/rear tyre size differential, with 225/40 front tyres and 255/40 rears on the Sports model, and 225/45 front tyres and 245/45 rears on the Sports Luxury model.

Wheel stroke has been increased compared to IS200, maximising ride comfort.

Two suspension calibrations were developed, including a dedicated calibration for IS250 Sports.

Lexus has also refined IS250’s underbody and rear overbody aerodynamics, for improved stability in addition to the new suspension.

IS250’s underbody aerodynamics have been redesigned to reduce noise and ensure the car’s handling characteristic remains constant as speed varies (by minimising fore and aft movement of the car’s aerodynamic centre of pressure).

The engine undercover is stepped to create a series of venturis. Low-pressure areas are located under the front of the car, thereby increasing downforce.

IS250 has a larger footprint on road than the vehicle it supersedes.

Wheelbase has been increased by 60mm to 2730mm, front track by 40mm to 1535mm and rear track by 50mm to 1535mm on the IS250 and IS250 Sports Luxury. IS250 Sports has a rear track of 1525mm.

Adopting an all-alloy V6 engine has reduced engine weight by 33kg compared to IS200 and IS300.

It has also allowed the designers to better concentrate vehicle mass between the axles and lower the centre of gravity – compared to the superseded iron-block IS200 and IS300 straight-six engines.

IS250’s rear suspension has been completely redesigned with a lightweight multi-link system replacing the IS200’s double-wishbone system.

Substantial front and rear cross-members support the suspension hardware, which increase suspension rigidity and hence driving stability.

The front cross-member is made of aluminium, with large, liquid-filled bushings at the rear mount of the lower arms to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The ball-joint-mounted stabiliser bars are fitted front and rear to minimise uncontrolled body roll.

New geometry

IS250 has new suspension geometry front and rear, to provide anti-dive, anti-lift and anti-squat characteristics.

The front suspension geometry has been designed to optimise initial camber and caster change rate during suspension travel, and hence maximise driving stability.

The new geometry also optimises stability under brakes.

Front and rear roll centre heights have been optimised to minimise postural change during cornering.

Cast-aluminium suspension uprights and aluminium brake calipers are used front and rear to minimise unsprung weight.

The front suspension arms are fabricated from high-strength steel sheet to increase rigidity and durability and reduce weight.

IS250’s front and rear suspension includes urethane bound-stoppers, and upper and lower isolators, to increase rigidity and reduce NVH.

The suspension upper supports have a load input dispersion construction to provide support while dispersing the input loads from the damper, coil spring and bound-stopper. This also improves ride comfort and reduces NVH.

Front suspension and steering

Lexus has redesigned IS250’s front double-wishbone suspension and steering to improve grip, linear yaw response, steering precision, straight-line stability and turning radius.

The new design, with high-mount upper arms, offers increased suspension travel and reduced toe change during suspension stroke to maximise tread width on the road.

The high-mount upper arms reduce the offset between the tyre centre and the kingpin axis at axle centre height. This reduces the movement around the kingpin and hence the chance of steering flutter.

The suspension components have been designed to maximise front wheel turning angle and achieve a turning circle of 10.2 metres.

The steering rack has been repositioned ahead of the axle line to provide smooth cornering response during highway driving.

Monotube dampers

IS250’s high-pressure gas-filled monotube dampers provide a natural, linear handling response to steering and a flat-riding characteristic.

The new IS250 dampers have multi-leaf-type linear control valves to provide progressive damping and start the damping force at extremely low piston velocities.

Increased damping force at ultra-low piston velocities reduces unsprung wheel stroke, thereby improving road tracking and ride comfort.

The new dampers also provide greater control of ultra-low-speed damping force for improved body roll control and initial damping characteristic.

In addition, the multi-leaf-type linear control valves provide smooth, more progressive damping in the transition between bound and rebound.

Monotube dampers have a range of benefits over conventional twin-tube dampers, including a significantly larger piston diameter, significantly increased range of damper tuning, increased durability and greater resistance to damper fluid cavitation.

The monotube damper design also provides for increased oil volume and means the "working" oil is adjacent to the damper body, thereby increasing heat dissipation.

The large diameter increases damper rigidity and gives the suspension engineers greater scope with valves and orifices to control to damper force at different damper velocities.

In addition, IS250’s monotube dampers have internal rebound springs.

Lexus has developed new-generation damper oil seals to better tune damper gas pressure rates and friction rates, and hence improve body control.

Improvements to IS250’s steering include adopting electronic power assistance, a new mounting system for the steering rack, new revised steering rack bush alignment and new bushes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 SPORTS HAS UNIQUE SUSPENSION CALIBRATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus has developed a unique sports suspension package for the IS250 Sports model.

The sports suspension package includes changes to spring length and wheel and tyre dimensions.

The springs have been shortened by 13mm.

In addition, IS250 Sports its own steering-gear ratio of 13:6:1 compared to 13:5:1 on IS250 and IS250 Sports Luxury.

The package consists of a sports 18-inch diameter alloy wheels and 40-aspect ratio tyres.

IS250 Sports has a front/rear tyre size differential, with 225/40R18 front tyres and 255/40R18 rear tyres.

IS250 Sports’ 40-aspect ratio tyres have the effect of increasing the spring constant.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MULTI-LINK REAR SUSPENSION FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has a new multi-link rear suspension system for a combination of high cornering stability and good ride comfort.

It provides zero toe change through the full range of wheel stroke.

IS250’s rear suspension system has dual upper links to minimise camber and tread width change during suspension travel. It also has a toe control arm.

Suspension control is by coil springs, monotube multi-leaf-type linear control valve dampers and a ball-joint-mounted stabiliser bar.

The rear springs are located are the bottom of the suspension units, to prevent damper stiction (sticking friction) and optimise luggage space.

The springs have upper and lower insulators to optimise stability and counter disturbance (the upper insulator) and minimise noise, vibration and harshness (the lower insulator).

IS250’s rear axle carriers are cast-aluminium to reduce unsprung weight. Its suspension arms are steel to optimise strength and durability.

IS250’s upper arm and lower number one arm are made of high-strength steel pipe to maximise rigidity and minimise weight.

The upper number two arm is also made of high-strength steel pipe and has a ball-joint on the axle side to increase rigidity and minimise weight.

The lower number two arm is stamped from high-strength steel sheet to maximise rigidity.

The bushing on the body side of the lower number two arm has an external cylinder and the axle side bushing has a pillow-ball bushing to optimise stability and ride comfort.

The toe control arm is made of forged iron and has an elliptical cross-section to optimise rigidity.

Special attention was paid to the design of the suspension bushings to optimise both suspension rigidity and ride comfort.

The spring rates of the upper number one arm and lower arm bushings have been designed to balance the need for a degree of longitudinal compliance (for good ride comfort) with the rigidity required for driving stability.

IS250’s rear suspension geometry has been designed to optimise the roll centre height. This minimises the change in height of the centre of gravity and provides excellent roll posture.

The geometry also provides anti-lift and anti-squat characteristics.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HIGHLY RESPONSIVE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering for improved steering feel and reduced fuel consumption compared to hydraulic power-assisted steering.

The highly responsive steering system provides a road speed-sensitive power-assist curve and reduces fuel consumption compared to superseded IS200’s hydraulic power steering.

IS250 Sports and Sports Luxury models also have power tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment with memory.

IS250 has manual tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment.

All IS250 models have 2.91 turns lock to lock.

IS250 Sports has a steering gear ratio of 13.6:1, compared to 13.5:1 on the IS250 and IS250 Sports Luxury.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) saves energy in high-speed and straight-line driving, as virtually no electric current is required.

The energy requirement increases with wheel turning angle, particularly at low road speeds.

However, hydraulic power steering requires continuous operation of the hydraulic pump.

EPS has the additional environmental benefit of eliminating the need for hydraulic oil (and a hydraulic oil reservoir) in the steering system.

It also reduces noise.

The key components in Lexus EPS are a torque sensor in the steering box to detect steering effort, and a controller to calculate torque assistance according to that effort.

The controller then drives the brushless direct-current motor based on the output value from the torque sensor and the motor rotation angle sensor.

The motor, ball-screw reduction gear and rotation sensor are integrated into the steering gear housing.

A lightweight steering controller contributes to package efficiency and overall weight saving.

IS250 CONTINUES NURBURGRING TRADITION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 continues the IS tradition of testing at the world’s most demanding racing circuit.

IS250 was extensively tested at the famous 22km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

It was also tested at Fuji International Speedway circuit (FISCO) in Japan.

The first IS200 was extensively tested in Japan, Australia and Europe, including public roads in the South of France.

The new IS250 uses the same design philosophy as the IS200, with an extremely stiff body, the weight concentrated towards the centre of the car and advanced suspension.

LEXUS LAUNCHES ALL-NEW IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus has launched an all-new IS250 in an all-out assault on the luxury market.

The 2.5-litre Quad Cam V6 IS250 is the first car in this market segment to be offered worldwide as a Lexus.

It replaces both the highly successful IS200 and IS300 models.

The Lexus ES300 will also be discontinued, confirming the entire Lexus range as either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

The IS250 is a wheels-up redevelopment with new chassis, styling, engine and drivetrain and a complete commitment to Lexus’ quality covenant.

It meets 500 key criteria for design, build quality and customer acceptance to qualify for Lexus’ status.

Lexus’ global plans for the new IS series are well in excess of the average 23,000/year production currently undertaken.

The IS250 engine develops 153kW of power and 252Nm of torque, driven through six-speed transmissions, either manual or sequential automatic.

It is also more fuel-efficient than the 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre engines it replaces.

Lexus IS250 will be available in three configurations: IS250, IS250 Sports and IS250 Sports Luxury, each with increasing levels of specification for customers’ requirements.

The IS250 introduces 13 world-first technologies.

It has the world’s first twin-chamber front passenger SRS airbag intended to offer more specific occupant protection.

It also establishes global firsts in electronics, active safety and noise attenuation.

IS250 has been priced substantially below the IS300 and within the range of the IS200.

The recommended retail price of the IS250 is $53,890*, well under the luxury car tax threshold of $57,009.

"IS250 enters the prestige and luxury market at a time of intense change," Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said.

“Two of its major rivals have launched new vehicles this year.

“To compete, it has had to establish high standards in styling, dynamics and most importantly in customers’ perception of quality.”

Pre-launch testing amongst potential buyers globally had been most positive.

“The first-generation IS Line did a lot to establish Lexus and to provide a springboard for owners to move up through the Lexus range,” Mr Grant said.

“The new IS series will both be a springboard and a destination in its own right.

“For many people there will be no reason to move elsewhere.”

*Recommended retail price excludes dealer delivery costs, government and statutory charges, and optional extras.

15,000KM SERVICE BECOMES THE LEXUS WAY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The launch of new IS250 heralds the introduction of one-year/15,000km servicing for Lexus models.

The one-year/15,000km service interval applies to IS250, GS300 and GS430, and upgraded SC430.

It will be progressively introduced across other Lexus models as new models are brought on line.

Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said the change to one-year/15,000km offered greater benefits to the customer and the environment compared to the current six-month/10,000km service regime.

"For our customers, service once a year means 50 per cent less inconvenience, because it’s one service per year instead of the current two," he said.

“It also reduces service costs over the life of the vehicle.

“For the environment, it means using and correctly disposing of half as much oil and half as many oil filters.”

The new generation of Lexus engines has a raft of design features to maximise reliability and minimise service time.

These features include adopting chain camshaft drive, maintenance-free valve clearance adjusters, a replaceable element oil filter, direct ignition, electronic engine control, an oil level sensor and an air/fuel ratio sensor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 HAS INCREASED BODY STRENGTH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has an all-new body designed for increased body rigidity and passive safety, and lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Special design features have been included to provide omnidirectional crash impact protection for front, rear and side-impact collisions and greater ease of reparability in a low-speed front or rear collision.

IS250 has Lexus’ Minimum Intrusion Cabin System (MICS) body design.

The body is designed to absorb impact in the event of a front or side collision, while also providing occupant protection in the reinforced cabin.

The cabin is designed to provide survival space for the occupants, including head and foot space.

A key feature of the MICS is its ability to disperse impact energy in the event of an offset frontal collision.

Lexus has paid particular attention to distributing side-impact collisions loads away from the B-pillar.

It has strengthened inner door reinforcements and reduced gaps between the door inner panel and the pillar. These measures help distribute impact energy load to the door belt line, reducing loading on the pillar.

IS250’s body makes extensive use of high-strength steel sheet in its monocoque body to meet Lexus’ weight, rigidity and NVH targets, and provide a stable platform for the new suspension.

Components pressed from high-strength steel sheet include all the major longitudinal members in the vehicle.

They also include the upper section of the inner front guards, the door skins, rocker panels, centre floor section and tunnel, the entire front door surround, the majority of the rear door surround, the rear cabin panel, the main roof cross-member, the door belt line members and the door anti-intrusion beams.

In addition to its highly rigid body, IS250 has a substantial aluminium support for the engine and front suspension.

It also has a tubular steel rear suspension support, a tubular steel differential support, two longitudinal body braces between the centre floor reinforcement and the front of the rear suspension support, and a pipe brace under the centre of the floor to reduce the chance of the floor flexing.

IS250’s front side-members have a hexagonal cross-section to optimise energy absorption and body durability.

IS250’s side collision impact-absorbing structure includes an enlarged roof reinforcement, centre pillar reinforcement and a bulkhead made from high-strength steel plates inside the rocker panel.

In addition, IS250 has a high-strength steel cross-member inner reinforcement in the rocker panel and a gusset for the where the floor cross-member meets the rocker panel.

The roof reinforcement is integrated with the centre pillar and the rocker panel section is integrated.

The rear end of the rocker panel is gusseted on the cabin interior side.

The doors have side impact protection beams that are designed to overlap with this gusset.

Measures to reduce repair costs in a frontal crash include crash box structures in front of the front side-members and a substantial front bumper support.

IS250’s comprehensive rear collision impact structure includes a lower back panel, rear crash boxes and an extruded aluminium rear bumper reinforcement.

IS250 HAS IMPROVED AERODYNAMICS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus has improved the aerodynamics of IS, for increased fuel efficiency, downforce and high-speed stability, and reduced interior noise levels.

The new IS250 has a drag coefficient of 0.27, compared to 0.28 for superseded IS200.

IS250’s exterior and aerodynamics are a perfect example of convergence of artistic design, efficiency for low drag and low noise, and special attention to the underbody to create negative lift.

The upper body air management strategy includes a ducktail shape in the boot lid, aerodynamic rocker shape on the vehicles sides and the Lexus first of an air kick in the rear combination lamps – for increased high-speed stability.

Underbody aerodynamics features include fairings in front of each wheel, to improve high-speed stability.

Lexus’ aerodynamicists can now draw on a diverse range of resources, including high-speed on-road tests conducted in the Northern Territory in 2003.

Lexus also has the use of the same wind tunnel used to develop Japan’s "bullet" trains.

Aerodynamic measures to minimise wind noise include side window mouldings with a hidden frame, to minimise the step between the window and the moulding.

They also include minimising the step between the windscreen and the roof panel, a rubber seal between the bonnet sides and the fenders, and a rubber seal between the front of the bonnet and the radiator grille.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 HAS STEPPED UNDERBODY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has a breakthrough stepped underbody to maximise downforce under the vehicle.

IS250 underbody has three phases: a stepped engine undercover to create a venturi effect and increase downforce, a flat bottom under the cabin and a diffuser at the rear.

IS250’s improved underbody aerodynamics help create negative lift and help ensure the car’s handling characteristic remains constant as speed varies.

IS250 has a number of individual aerodynamic underbody parts, beginning with the new stepped engine undercover.

The underbody aerodynamics parts reduce drag and increase downforce by channelling air smoothly under the car, particularly around the wheels, driveline and exhausts.

The underbody treatment is designed to prevent air slowing as it travels under the car, as slower flow creates increased pressure and, hence, lift.

There are spats (fairings) for the front and rear wheels to smooth airflow around the tyres, including the area within the wheel wells.

IS250’s underbody aero parts include a series of undercovers, insulators and protectors for the engine, transmission, large areas of the floor and the differential supports.

Underbody panels also smooth the gaps between the rocker panels and main chassis rails.

There are NACA ducts on the transmission undercover to promote cooling airflow around the transmission while minimising drag.

NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, was the predecessor of space agency NASA.

Fairings on the leading edge of the mufflers also help minimise drag.

IS250 has large front brake cooling ducts to direct air inside the wheels, where it is then expelled through the wheel spokes.

ATTENTION TO NVH SHOWS LEXUS BREEDING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 employs the Lexus trademark of eliminating noise "at the source" with leading-edge sound-reduction technology.

The commitment to low interior nose levels confirms the Lexus breeding in new IS250.

Breakthrough features include sound-absorbing technology in the sun visors.

IS250’s sun visors have holes in the outer shell, to absorb noise that might enter the cabin from the windscreen and the cowl.

The windscreen has an inner film with high noise-dampening characteristics, to reduce reverberation in the cabin and prevent exterior noise from entering the vehicle.

Sound insulation and absorption materials around the cabin have been arranged according to the acoustic requirements – to minimise noise while meeting strict weight targets.

The sound-absorbing material includes highly rigid foam-type asphalt sheet with low specific gravity for key areas.

Lexus has optimally placed insulation materials, with silencers on the floor tunnel, floor, roof, dash inner, dash outer, door trims, room partition, rear quarter garnish and luggage area mat.

Foam material has been placed in the door surround channels and the roof cross-member to reduce wind noise.

Lexus designed IS250 for low interior noise levels, beginning with its strong body, low coefficient of drag and V6 all-alloy engine.

In addition to reducing the Cd and smoothing underbody airflow, Lexus paid special attention to minimising wind noise – with reduced offsets between the mouldings and door or windscreen glass, a seal between the radiator grille and the bonnet, and seals between the bonnet and the front fenders.

IS250’s body design has special features to maximise rigidity and minimise road noise.

These include improving the cross-sectional areas of the pillars, panel joints, side panels and rocker panels.

The body has two substantial floor cross-members in the area where the rear suspension member mounts to the body, to maximise rigidity and reduce road noise.

IS250’s V6 engine is a 60-degree design, to optimise balance.

The use of aluminium alloy crankcases further reduces noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Special attention was paid to the design of the engine mounts, with liquid-filled front engine mounts.

IS250’s front and rear suspension, and final drive, are carried in substantial rubber-mounted support structures, to isolate the body from road noise and road shock.

The front suspension support is aluminium and has large liquid-filled bushings to mount the lower arms for optimal roadholding and harshness control.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 HAS MORE SPACE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus’ IS250 has improved packaging and a lower centre of gravity.

The new engine/drive package provides increased interior space and a better concentration of the mass of the vehicle between the axles.

Lexus engineers have increased the wheelbase of the new IS250 by 60mm over the superseded IS200 to 2670mm.

Turning circle has been minimised by repositioning the steering rack forward of the front axle line, increasing the turning angle of the wheels.

Couple distance is 880mm.

The vehicle’s centre of gravity has been better centralised by adopting an all-alloy V6 engine in place of the previous IS200 and IS300 straight-six iron-block engines.

The vehicle’s overall dimensions have increased by 175mm in length, 75mm in width and 5mm in height.

The increase in exterior width translates to an increased interior width of 1475mm, 35mm wider than its predecessor.

IS250’s fuel tank is 65 litres and located under the rear seat cushion, straddling the tail shaft.

The fuel tank location contributes to concentrating mass within the wheelbase, thereby reducing polar moment of inertia and improving handling.

The new IS250 has 0.378 cubic metres (378 litres) of luggage capacity.

IS250 EXTENDS L-FINESSE STYLING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new IS250 extends the global continuity of Lexus’ L-finesse styling.

It contains L-Finesse styling cues debuted earlier this year in the GS Line.

IS250 was styled at Lexus’ design centre in Nagoya, under the overall direction of Lexus’ group manager of design strategy in the Global Design Management Division, Simon Humphries.

His role is to ensure the global continuity and success of the L-Finesse design aesthetic, which embodies two concepts: L for Leading Edge and Finesse.

IS250’s grille has been lowered in relation to the headlights, to draw the viewer’s line of sight to the front of the vehicle.

The headlamps and front foglamps share a design theme, and the aggressive, twin-barrel headlamp clusters strengthen the impression of speed and agility.

The IS250 grille highlights the clean, muscular surface of the aluminium bonnet, which sweeps seamlessly to the windscreen pillar.

An adjacent concave surface stretches between bonnet and wheel arch, to reinforce the new vehicle’s wide, dynamic front stance.

It is punctuated by a new, sporty, door-mounted mirror design as it flows into the narrowing belt line.

At the rear, the wheel arches taper into a short, aggressive overhang, topped with powerful LED lamp clusters that reflect the intriguing elegance of the L-Finesse philosophy.

The side styling includes an aggressively curved rear end and short overhangs, to emphasise IS250’s stance.

The C-pillar flows to boot lid to provide coupe-type proportions.

Seven exterior colours are offered: Crystal Pearl, Crystal Mist, Granite, Silver Mica Metallic, Classic Black, Sandstone Mica and Deepest Sapphire.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL HIGHLIGHTS NEW INTERIOR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus designers have developed a new, high-quality interior look for IS250.

The use of a new modelling technique allowed the designers to create a design that transcends the vehicle’s size.

The instrument panel has character lines flowing towards the driver and then cutting back to form the meter hood.

The door trim has a raised surface running from rear to front, then fluidly changing direction to create an S shape and form the door grip.

Top-of-the-range IS250 Sports Luxury has centre console woodgrain, sourced from a single tree and prepared by Japan’s famed piano makers – Yamaha and Kawai.

Panels for each vehicle are prepared separately, then matched for grain and appearance during assembly.

IS250’s instrument cluster includes a multi-information display and new Optitron meters.

The meters can be personalised for vehicle speed and engine revolution warnings via a satellite switch.

A newly adopted satellite switch allows the driver to switch the multi-information display on and off.

The display includes a gear position indicator – when the auto transmission lever is in the ‘S’ position.

When personalised, the meter rings change colour according to the vehicle speed and engine rpm.

The colour changes to amber to warn the driver that the engine revolutions and/or vehicle speed have reached the pre-selected values.

The illumination changes to red as engine speed or vehicle speed approaches maximum limit.

The instrument cluster in IS250 has been configured three-dimensionally to create a new appearance by having the speedometer and tachometer over the top of other dials.

The meter dial surface is metallic-finished, for a more luxurious look.

IS250’s three-spoke leather-bound steering wheel has a new cross-sectional shape to improve feel where the hands rest on the wheel, and driving posture.

Automatic transmission models have paddles for changing gear, using the sequential-shift function. In addition, there is the ability to sequentially shift using the gear lever.

The steering wheel also has audio controls.

IS250 has two seat types, according to model grade, both with three colour choices – Black, Ivory and Grey.

IS250 and IS250 Sports Luxury have premium full-face leather seats.

The front seats have climate-controlled heating and cooling functions.

IS250 Sports has sport-style seats with high-grade Alcantara covering, with seat heater functions.

In addition, three memory seat settings are available for the IS250 Sports and IS250 Sports Luxury.

CREATURE COMFORTS: IS250’S NEW AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has a state-of-the-art automatic air conditioning system, with independent temperature control for the left and right side of the cabin.

The system includes the hallmark Lexus cabin comfort technologies of a smog ventilation sensor and an easy-to-change pollen filter in the air conditioning system.

The smog sensor is adjustable for sensitivity, using the controls on the climate control panel.

It automatically changes the air intake from ‘fresh’ to ‘recirculate’ if a sensor located behind the radiator grille detects uncomfortable levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons or oxides of nitrogen.

Special features of the IS250 air conditioning system also include neural network control so the passengers can fine-tune the system for maximum comfort and a ‘face’ mode in the rear seat to blow warm air and ensure maximum heating performance.

The system designers have paid special attention to creating a lightweight, compact high-high-performance climate control system.

The IS250 system uses BUS connectors and a lightweight wiring harness to reduce the amount of wiring, and pulse-pattern-type servomotors to control airflow.

The blower motor has a built-in controller to reduce package size.

Lexus has optimised cooling performance of IS250 by adopting a semi-centre air con unit location (behind the glove box), a super-slim evaporator, a straight-flow aluminium heater core, a multi-flow sub-cool condenser and a continuously variable capacity compressor.

PURE WATER GIVES PURE LEXUS SOUND

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 raises the level of in-car audio experience, with customised top-of-the-line stereo systems, breakthrough noise-dampening technology and extraordinary detail in speaker construction.

Lexus’ reputation for extreme attention to detail combined with Chief Engineer Suguya Fukusato’s passion for music led to a search to reproduce the audio experience of his private studio.

Mr Fukusato collected a number of premium natural water samples from areas across Japan famous for producing high-quality Japanese sake – Japanese rice wine.

These samples were used to ascertain the effect of pure, natural water sources on sound reproduction while developing cone paper for IS250’s subwoofer speaker.

This subwoofer will feature in a 13-speaker premium surround sound system, while IS250 will also be offered with Lexus’ premium 5.1-channel 14-speaker Mark Levinson system.

Both systems will also feature in dash six-CD multi-changer and an AUX adapter in the console box for portable audio devices.

The Mark Levinson stereo system has been specially developed for IS250 – as the automotive equivalent of home entertainment audio system from the manufacturer which usually retails in excess of $30,000, without speakers.

The commitment to low interior nose levels also confirms the Lexus breeding in IS250.

IS250 combines the Lexus trademark of eliminating noise "at the source" with leading-edge sound reduction technology.

Breakthrough features include incorporating sound-absorbing technology in the sun visors.

IS250’s sun visors have holes in the outer shell, to absorb noise that might enter the cabin from the windscreen and the cowl.

IS250 COMES WITH POLLEN REMOVAL MODE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus’ IS250 has a world-first system to remove pollen from the cabin.

The breakthrough Lexus pollen removal mode is designed to optimise occupant comfort, by quickly removing pollen from around the upper bodies of the driver and front passenger.

It builds on the hallmark Lexus cabin comfort technologies of a smog ventilation sensor and an easy-to-change pollen filter in the air conditioning system.

Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said the new system is an absolute must, considering Australia has such a high number of asthma and hay fever sufferers.

Australia has the world’s highest incidence of asthma and pollen is the most common cause of seasonal allergies.

IS250’s pollen removal mode operates for up to three minutes, blowing recirculated pollen-free air through the front face air vents.

A switch on the heater control panel activates the pollen removal system.

When the switch is activated, IS250’s automatic air conditioning system switches the air inlet to ‘recirculate’ and the air vents to ‘face’ mode.

It then blows recirculated pollen-free air around upper bodies of driver and front passenger, using the medium blower speed setting.

Once the pollen removal mode has ended, the air conditioning ECU automatically resumes control of the climate control system, using ‘auto’ mode.

The system will usually operate for approximately three minutes; however, it will operate for approximately one minute if the outside air temperature is low.

IS250’s clean air (pollen) filter excels in removal of dust and pollen.

It is made of polyester for non-hazardous disposal and located near the glove box for ease of replacement.

Lexus introduced the easily changeable dust and pollen filter as a standard feature in the 1994 LS400.

It has been a standard feature of every new Lexus model since the late 1990s.

IS250 ESTABLISHES STRONG PRICING PROPOSITION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus has maintained its status as a strong prestige car market participant by bringing some variants of its new IS250 to market well under the luxury car tax threshold.

The well-equipped luxury Lexus carries a recommended retail price from just $53,890* (for IS250 manual).

That is more than $3000 under the luxury tax threshold, and only 8.9 per cent above the recommended retail price of the equivalent grade of the IS200 it supersedes, which had lower equipment levels.

It is $6010 (11 per cent) less than the equivalent grade of the IS300 it also supersedes, and it contains more specification value.

It is well placed against rival brands both in recommended retail price and in specification comparisons.

The IS250 is one of the most completely equipped vehicles in its category.

"The IS250 is a triumph in design, specification and price," Scott Grant, divisional manager, Lexus Australia, said.

“Customer research indicated a far higher expectation of entry price.

“The majority of potential purchasers estimated its starting value well above the luxury tax threshold and closer to vehicles in the $60,000 bracket.”

Mr Grant said it was important to maintain a strong entry price to keep faith with the Lexus covenant of spanning the range of prestige and luxury vehicles.

“Sophisticated engineering and manufacturing techniques have always allowed Lexus to establish a value advantage – and this vehicle is a shining example,” he said.

Three variants of the IS250 are beneath the luxury tax threshold.

Lexus has established an across-the-board additional recommended cost of $2600* for its six-speed automatic transmission models.

The IS250 six-speed automatic has a recommended retail price of $56,490*.

The only option available on the IS250 is a factory-fitted moonroof at a recommended price of $1500*.

Lexus IS250 Sports carries a recommended retail price of $67,400* for the manual transmission variant and $70,000* for the automatic.

Standard equipment on this model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, adaptive HID headlamps, moonroof and sports pedals.

IS250 Sports Luxury’s recommended price is $78,500*.

An optional luxury pack for the IS250 Sports is expected to be a popular choice.

It combines the sports model with luxury items, including new-generation Sat Nav, Bluetooth, Rear View Camera with Rear Guide Assist and a Mark Levinson 14-speaker audio system with DVD audio and video compatibility when stationary.

IS250 Sports plus option has a recommended retail price of $74,000* for the manual transmission model and $76,600* for the automatic.

According to Mr Grant, the IS250 Sports is readily recognisable as a sports vehicle while IS250 Sports Luxury, with its rich timber interior trim, exudes luxury.

“The Lexus IS250 range provides a logical progression to the GS Line which starts at a recommended retail of $95,000*,” Mr Grant said.

“Only the RX330 SUV at $73,200* now sits within the linear pricing structure of Lexus models.”

Mr Grant said a major Lexus advantage was its adherence to a minimum-options policy.

“The features policy for IS250 is very clear in the high levels of standard specification which are included within the recommended retail price,” he said.

“It's very easy for purchasers within the prestige and luxury category to find themselves faced with substantial additional costs to bring rival vehicles up to Lexus specification.”

PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM FOR IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus’ top-of-the-range IS250 Sports Luxury has radar-controlled technology designed to reduce collision damage and injury.

The Lexus Pre-Collision System (PCS) prepares the car’s safety systems in advance of a collision.

PCS is part of a comprehensive active and passive safety package.

It is a fusion of leading-edge active and passive safety technology.

Radar-controlled PCS optimises seatbelt and emergency braking efficiency.

If the system senses that an impact is unavoidable, it prepares the car’s seatbelt and Brake Assist (BA) systems.

PCS features a millimetre-wavelength radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car and a dedicated computer that monitors vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate.

The three conditions for system activation are as follows:

· when the inter-vehicle distance control ECU determines that a collision cannot be avoided; and/or

· when the Vehicle Swerve Control (VSC) and electronic braking control ECUs determine that emergency braking has been applied, or

· when the vehicle is in an extreme understeer or oversteer situation.

In such eventualities, PCS pre-emptively retracts all slack from the seatbelts and prepares BA for maximum braking force. Any brake application delivers the maximum possible reduction of collision speed.

IS250 HAS HAC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has the added safety and convenience of a device to ensure smooth take-off on steep hills.

Lexus Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) is an automatic function to prevent IS250 rolling downhill when starting off, and is available on the automatic transmission models.

It is particularly helpful on low-traction off-road surfaces.

In addition, HAC protects the automatic transmission’s torque converter from excessive strain.

The system is part of IS250’s new brake control technology.

If the system detects that the vehicle is rolling backwards during a hill start, it automatically applies hydraulic brake pressure to the four wheels, providing ample time for the driver’s foot to move from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.

SONAR PARKING ASSIST SYSTEM FOR LEXUS IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lexus IS250 has an ultrasonic clearance parking system for added convenience.

The sonar parking assist system is standard equipment on IS250 Sports and IS250 Sports Luxury.

It is a technology flow-down from flagship LS430.

The front and rear bumper-mounted parking ultrasonic sensors alert the driver – through a series of beeps and car frame graphics on the instrument panel – when the car is too close to an object.

The IS250 Sport Luxury and the IS250 Sports with Option Pack also display parking clearance information on the Electro Multi-Vision (EMV) screen.

The parking sonars and graphics activate on preset clearance areas around the car.

There are two ultrasonic sensors in the front bumper, one in each corner of the rear bumper and two back sensors.

PARKING ASSIST MONITOR ON IS250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS250 Sports Luxury has the latest-generation Lexus Rear View Camera as standard equipment.

It is a development of the Rear View Camera that topped the NRMA Insurance Reversing Visibility Index in the Lexus GS430 in May this year.

The Rear View Camera-equipped Lexus RX330 Sports Luxury topped the Four Wheel Drive section of the same safety study.

The new-generation Rear View Camera has Lexus Rear Guide Assist, which superimposes guidelines on the Electro Multi-Vision (EMV) screen for manual parking assist and parallel parking assist.

Manual parking assist is a guide for parking in a garage or parking space.

Parallel parking assist is for parallel parking the vehicle on either side of the road.

Lexus now has seven models with a rear view camera – IS250 Sports Luxury, three GS line models, all-wheel-drive RX330 Sports Luxury, luxury four-wheel-drive LX470 and flagship LS430.

The CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) camera is located in the centre of IS250 Sports Luxury’s rear licence-plate garnish.

It operates when reverse gear is selected.

The camera has a wide-angle lens to provide a wide arc of vision at the rear of the vehicle.

The Rear View Camera is linked to the standard seven-inch EMV satellite navigation screen in the dashboard.

The EMV screen is standard equipment on IS250 Sports Luxury and part of the Option Pack for IS250 Sports.

It also provides touch-screen control for the standard Bluetooth telephone functions, Satellite Navigation System (when available), audio system, climate control system, trip computer and Lexus information menu.

ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL ON NEW IS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top-of-the-range IS250 Sports Luxury has Lexus Active Cruise Control (ACC) to help drivers maintain appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance in motorway driving.

The Lexus system is based on millimetre-wavelength radar.

IS250 Sports Luxury has two cruise control modes – a conventional mode known as constant speed control, and vehicle-to-vehicle distance control.

Lexus IS250 and IS250 Sports – manual and automatic – have conventional cruise control.

The engine ECU controls the constant-speed mode.

The vehicle-to-vehicle mode uses a radar sensor, yaw rate sensor, steering sensor and various other units to recognise the distance to the vehicle in front and in the same driving lane.

The system includes a new deceleration feedback control, which gently activates the brakes to provide smooth deceleration when required to maintain vehicle spacing.

There are four sub-modes in vehicle-to-vehicle control. They are:

· Driver-set constant speed – the radar detecting no vehicle ahead allows the driver to set desired inter-vehicle spacing in anticipation of its need using the distance control;

· Deceleration control – the ACC detecting a slower vehicle ahead in the same lane slows the IS250 by closing the electronic throttle, and if necessary also signalling the Skid Control ECU to apply the brakes. If the system cannot sufficiently reduce the vehicle’s speed, it alerts the driver by sounding an alarm;

· Following control – the IS250 Sports Luxury maintains a specific distance to the vehicle in front. The inter-vehicle distance can be changed using the distance control switch;

· Acceleration control – if the vehicle in front moves into another lane, the IS250 Sports Luxury can return to its pre-set target speed. ACC operates in vehicle-to-vehicle mode when the cruise control switch is first activated.

The initial distance setting is the ‘long’ setting of approximately 75 metres.

The driver can toggle on the steering wheel to the middle setting (approximately 50 metres) or short setting (approximately 30 metres).

In vehicle-to-vehicle mode, the system recognises and determines the lane in which the vehicle is travelling and the lane in which the vehicle ahead is travelling. The system will maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead, using information from the radar sensor.

If the system detects the need for any system-induced brake application to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance, it will notify the driver via the instrument panel’s multifunction display and it will illuminate the stop lamps.

Warning messages are programmed into the instrument panel multifunction display to warn the driver if the radar sensor is inoperative or when any conditions that cancel radar cruise control are present.

In addition, the multifunction display has graphics to display the mode in use (constant speed or vehicle distance) and the speed setting or distance setting.

The measuring system for vehicle-to-vehicle distance is a millimetre-wavelength radar mounted behind the radiator grille.

The system’s central processing unit (CPU) calculates distance on the duration and input angle of any returning beams.

The CPU is designed so it does not react to non-moving objects, such as a vehicle parked at the side of the road.

ACC is not an accident avoidance system.

IS250 HAS DATA DOT IDENTIFICATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 will have an additional security measure from launch.

All IS250 models sold in Australia will have their vehicle identification numbers printed on 5000 Data Dot micro identification dots in strategic locations around the vehicle.

The launch of Data Dot identification on IS250 heralds the full introduction of the security system across the Lexus range from 1 January 2006.

Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said the introduction of the Data Dot system would act as a significant theft deterrent and reduce insurance premiums for owners.

"All Lexus vehicles will carry a decal in the rear quarter window, stating that the vehicle has Data Dots, to deter thieves," he said.

“The police and the roads and traffic authorities in the various States have magnifying readers, allowing them to match stolen components to the source vehicle.”

The Data Dot system consists of micro dots the size of a grain of sand, made from a high-tech polyester substrate and suspended in a clear drying adhesive with a UV trace.

This means they are invisible to the naked eye until exposed to ultraviolet light.

The dots are laser etched with the vehicle identification number, then applied to the vehicle using a unique, patented spray process.

LEXUS IS LINE NEARS 200,000 GLOBAL SALES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Global sales of the Lexus IS Line should surpass 200,000 by mid-2006.

In Australia more than 10,000 IS Line models are expected to have been delivered by the end of 2005.

Year-to-date September 2005, 9899 Australian deliveries have been recorded.

The highly successful IS200 was first launched in 1999 in Australia.

The IS300 was launched in Australia in 2001.

The IS Line accounted for just on 50 per cent of all Lexus sales in Australia for four consecutive years, and in 2000 it made up 59 per cent of Lexus deliveries.

It was only with the introduction of Lexus RX330 and new models of vehicles like GS300 that its contribution dropped to the current mix level of 28 per cent.

Lexus IS200 was also sold in Japan as a four-cylinder Altezza and more than 100,000 have been delivered domestically.

In August 2005 Japan adopted the Lexus franchise, confirming Lexus as a truly global brand.

The production of the new IS Line is a major statement of capability by Lexus in Japan to create a purpose-built Lexus for entry into the prestige and lower luxury segment.

"In one respect this vehicle is as important a statement of capability as the original LS400," Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said.

“Lexus came into being on the premise of being the world’s most completely specified luxury car at a price and value that set a new benchmark.

“It was hugely successful and sparked a re-evaluation by all traditional luxury car makers, which has resulted across the board in far better cars at far better prices.

“Now, to a degree, the new IS Line is offering the same challenge.

“Lexus has built a vehicle to its own very high standards – especially in terms of engineering and build quality, but also in respect of specification.

“There will be some automotive companies that will reverse-engineer IS to try to discover how a vehicle of this quality can be put to market at such a competitive price.

“Like IS, it is doubtful if they will fully be able to identify the levels of expertise that have created the car.

“The success of all purpose-built Lexus models lies in a philosophy of back-to-the-source technology in which cost is not built out of the car as much as quality is built in.

“The new IS250 Line is as well engineered and well manufactured as the LS flagship – without compromise.”

LEXUS POWERS AHEAD OF SEGMENT GROWTH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Demand for Lexus in the prestige car segment has been well ahead of the growth of the sector.

Lexus is also one of the major performers in the pure luxury car market which is in slight decline.

Lexus deliveries in total this year are up 17.4 per cent and the marque is on track for a record year, well in excess of its 2004 record of 5009 new vehicles.

Demand for prestige cars – those beneath the luxury tax threshold – is up 12.3 per cent this year, and that for Lexus IS200 is up 16.2 per cent.

Demand for luxury cars has slipped slightly by 3.4 per cent, but demand for all but one Lexus model is up better than 20 per cent (from August to September 05).

Lexus IS300 and IS200 are running at a demand rate of better than 15 per cent increase on last year.

Lexus is a strong third in the luxury car market.

Its top performer is the new GS300/430 Line released at the start of 2005 and which is fielding demand five times that for the previous model.

Just under 500 of the new GS Line had been delivered by the end of August.

"Understandably IS200 is the top-selling Lexus passenger vehicle, behind the RX330 SUV," Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said.

“It accounts for 22 per cent of all Lexus demand.

“Lexus IS200 and IS300 combined make up 28.3 per cent of the range.

“It’s anticipated IS250 will improve substantially on that ratio.”

Mr Grant said the rationalisation of ES300 had been necessary to ensure a logical progression from the three vehicles of the IS250 series to the GS300.

“In passenger vehicle terms, Lexus provides a very linear progression,” he said.

“Owners will appreciate the strategic progression – both in terms of model specification and also value addition.”

Mr Grant said the prestige and luxury segments had become critical.

“Just as in the broader market, there is a move to smaller and more efficient vehicles in terms of purchase price and operating cost,” he said.

“However, in the prestige and luxury segments, customers do not want to give up their specification luxuries or their prestige.

“That’s why they are in the market.”

There was evidence that the purchase choice was becoming more critical amongst buyers of flagship models.

Demand for the flagship models of the big three – Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus – have each declined this year but sales of other series by those car makers have remained strong.

“The luxury segment is also experiencing buyer reaction to external forces,” Mr Grant said.

“There is great opportunity for a new vehicle like IS250 to be able to capitalise on the trend.

“IS250 Sports Luxury – the IS flagship – is a particularly strong proposition in its specification/value ratio.”

NEW V6 CHANGES PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lexus IS250 has a 2.5-litre Quad Cam multi-valve direct-injection dual VVT-i V6 engine.

The all-alloy V6 is the first V-configuration engine offered in the IS range.

The Lexus 4GR-FSE D-4 (direct-injection, four-stroke gasoline) engine has 34 per cent more power and 29 per cent more torque than the 2.0-litre straight-six engine in IS200 it supersedes.

IS250’s V6 delivers 153kW of power at 6400rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4800rpm.

Its V-configuration engines contribute to the new IS design goal of further concentrating mass within the wheelbase.

The shorter length of the engine means its centre of mass can be placed closer to the rear of the engine bay.

The direct-injection petrol V6 IS250 combines improved performance engine with new levels of fuel efficiency.

It has official ADR81/01 fuel economy of 9.1 litres/100km for the automatic transmission models.

This compares to 9.9 litres/100km for superseded Lexus IS200 – an eight per cent improvement for the same number of cylinders and a 500cc capacity increase.

IS250 six-speed manual has ADR 81/01 economy of 9.8 litres/100km compared to 9.9 litres/100km for the superseded IS200 manual model.

IS250 has 14.2 per cent better fuel economy than superseded IS300.

The new IS250 delivers this improvement in fuel economy while providing higher levels of performance, safety, comfort and feature levels as well as lower noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The 2.5-litre V6 can be matched to a new six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with Lexus-first shift paddles on the steering wheel.
